Article Abstract:

The UK market for travel facilities and attractions reached 2.61 billion pounds sterling in 1998, up 12.4% from 1995. The sector, which encompasses theme parks, casinos, national parks, museums and zoos, is benefitting from the strength of the UK tourist market and is expected to reach 3.41 billion pounds sterling in 2003. Theme park sales between 1995 and 1998 grew by 39.8% to 217.2 million pounds sterling, with casino sales rising by 9.9% to 2.23 billion pounds sterling, museum sales growing by 11.2% to 93.7 million pounds sterling and zoo sales rising by 34.9% to 63.4 million pounds sterling.

In 1995, the market for days out was valued at 1.26 billion pounds sterling, representing a 4.3% rise since 1991. In 1994, museums and art galleries attracted more than 80 million visitors; compared to country parks with 57 million visitors; leisure parks and piers with 40 million; and wildlife sites with 23 million. An overview of the industry is given, together with consumer profiles; significant factors in choosing a day out; market size and trends; different locations; and forecasts for the future.

An analysis of the market for day trips in the UK is presented, with the most favoured destinations highlighted. Although in 1998 the number of trips fell to 395.9 million, the revenues rose to a value of 1,137 million pounds sterling.
