A new name in the high street

Article Abstract:

Unichem is a UK pharmaceuticals retailer and wholesaler which has acquired 46 companies between 1990 and 1995, with 14 of these acquired in 1994 for 51 million pounds sterling. The company spent some 25 million pounds on the acquisition of 63 retail outlets from Molescroft Holdings and Investments in 1994. Unichem aims to expand into mainland Europe and has set up an alliance with other wholesalers from Switzerland, Italy, Germany and France. The new body is to be called the International Pharmaceutical Service Organization (IPSO).

Scotland: prudence pays

Article Abstract:

Although Glasgow's industrial scene has changed radically over the last 20 years, with traditional shipbuilding and engineering industries making way for tourism, consultancy, finance and health care business, the city currently boasts the third most productive manufacturing sector in the UK. Motherwell Bridge, John Brown Engineering, Howden Group, and the Weir Group are among the companies which are doing well in Glasgow. An overview of industry in Glasgow and Edinburgh is given.

Article Abstract:

Strategy consultants make considerable efforts to operate discreetly, especially as managers are often rather cautious about the consultants' role in deals. However, strategy consultants are often involved in preparing clients for a large acquisition or divestment, and are used regularly by a large proportion of UK quoted companies. Many companies now see employing a strategy consultant as a very worthwhile investment.
