A pity about Uncle Obuchi
Article Abstract:
An early election could be held in Japan, where there has been a drop in support for the cabinet of Keizo Obuchi, prime minister since mid-1998. The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is concerned. The LDP has allied with New Komeito, formerly a political enemy, in order to retain power. New Komeito is linked to Soka Gakkai, a lay-Buddhist organization, and there is concern amomg a number of Japanese about granting access to power to Soka Gakkai. The LDP could decide on an early election, and has been offered a merger with the Liberal Party.

The ruling Liberal Democrats have dominated Japanese politics since 1946, and some political observers believe the absence of strong opposition parties is hampering Japan's progress towards a true democracy. Elections need to be decided on ideas, rather than party loyalty.
