A question of trust: South Korean funds need bail-out after buying binge

Article Abstract:

South Korea may need to reformulate its financial policy to manage the insolvency of Daehan Investment Trust Co, Korea Investment Trust Company Ltd and Citizens Investment Trust Management Co. Government's moves would affect both small, domestic investors and foreign investors, since several foreign investment trusts were among those mismanaged. Through an interventionist policy, the government effected dependency where a viable stock and bond market should have emerged. In the long run, direct foreign investment in the Seoul stock exchange may have beeen undermined by the financial policies.

Grains of truth

Article Abstract:

Recent pronouncements by South Korean government officials of the need to open up the country to rice imports have been met with little opposition by the South Korean public. South Koreans have long opposed the importation of rice but domestic and international pressure has forced the government to advocate the lowering of barriers against rice imports. The government policy of subsidizing rice production has not lowered the high price of rice in the country. Allowing the entry of foreign rice will mean a more efficient system of rice production in South Korea.

Conspicuous errors

Article Abstract:

The South Korean government portrays its latest austerity campaign as a much-needed citizen's drive against excessive consumption, which it says is responsible for the country's worsening inflation. A cursory analysis of South Korea's economic woes suggests that the austerity campaign will have little effect as the country's inflation problems, largely the result of loose monetary policy and an archaic financial system.
