Window dressing: dissidents' release aimed at pleasing the West

Article Abstract:

China's decision to release three political dissenters from jail may be an attempt to improve China's current standing with Western countries. Diplomats have observed that the release of Wang Dan, Guo Haifeng and Li Guiren may have something to do with the arrival of two important foreign delegations to the country. US trade representatives headed by Ira Wolf and Douglas Newkirk were due to visit China to discuss China's future in the GATT. Also due for a visit is an International Olympic Committee inspection team that would assess the country's chances at hosting the 2000 Olympic games.
