Bordering on peace: China and India ease tensions along frontier

Article Abstract:

Chinese-Indian relations improved somewhat due to Indian Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao's journey to China where he conferred with Chinese Premier Li Peng in Peking. Most importantly, Rao and Li signed a 'peace and tranquillity' agreement concerning the border between the two countries. The agreement specifies that both countries will abide by the line that now separates Chinese and Indian forces pending final concurrence on where the border lies. Rao and Li discussed other issues such as Chinese arms sales to Pakistan.

In from the cold

Article Abstract:

Chinese Premier Li Peng's standing in the international diplomatic community seems to be improving, three years after the 1989 Tiananmen massacre. China's foreign relations are getting better, as evidenced by US Pres George Bush's decision to meet with the Chinese Premier during the latter's May 1992 international tour. Li's growing international respectability is expected to strengthen his domestic powers.
