The government's 2004 spending review and the Gershon report

Article Abstract:

Gershon Report deals with efficiency saving in the public sector. The relationship between Labour's first Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR) of July 1998 for government departments and the Gershon Report is examined. The problems to control government spending and the problems that might occur if spending is curtailed are discussed.

The public finances: present and future

Article Abstract:

A review of budget 2004 planned by the Chancellor of the Exchequer has revealed a saving in public services and also to minimize tax avoidance and maximize current tax revenue. The three rules, the golden rule, the sustainable investment rule, and the Maastricht Treaty fiscal rules are briefly described.

The government's fiscal rules: origins, development and problems

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the introduction of two fiscal rules by the government of the United Kingdom which would enable it to achieve stable and high economic employment and growth. The changes made are discussed.
