Strength in numbers

Article Abstract:

Jim Copeland is the new chief executive of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, a major consultant and accounting firm. The biggest five firms in this sector have become successful in a global market where major multinationals depend on them. They are moving into the field of law, aiming to offer one-stop shopping for their clients. Copeland sees gains to be made by the legal profession, as well as by the accounting firms. Global markets may be beginning a boom over the long term and this would benefit the accounting firms. Copeland does not foresee growth as rapid as Deloitte enjoyed in 1998, but the future is not easy to predict.

On a wing and a hotel room

Article Abstract:

Pricewaterhouse Coopers' Ellen Knapp spends much of her working time travelling. She is the chief information and knowledge officer of the new company, set up from the merger of Price Waterhouse with Coopers and Lybrand. Technology such as the intranet appears helpful in allowing her to maintain contact with home rather than allowing offices to communicate with each other. She stresses the importance of trust, which cannot always be developed through e-mails. Trends toward larger mergers mean that business travel could continue to grow.
