A radical but simple solution for a British Council HQ

Article Abstract:

The British Council's new Spanish administrative headquarters, in Madrid, are the result of a refurbishment project to turn a poorly maintained villa into a modern office. The villa had many design and maintenance faults, but architects Jestico & Whiles managed to resolve these while still keeping within the strict cost and time constraints imposed by the British Council. The answer to the lighting and circulation problems is an elliptical skylight and elliptical staircase, with the remainder of the building fabric simply being restored, and the flat roofs replaced.

Essex man: The next generation

Article Abstract:

The Essex Design Guide was an influential document during the 1970s and has recently been updated by a working party of the Essex Planning Officers' Association. It aims to encourage best practice in the design and layout of residential and mixed-use developments. It calls on the landscape structure to encompass public open spaces, but also to provide a contrast to the built environment. It recommends that the surface-water run-off system design should be considered in tandem with the landscape structure.
