A reunification of strangers?

Article Abstract:

The reunification of Germany is imminent, but it would be naive to assume that the 45-year partition of Germany in which each sector had extremely different forms of government has not changed the two populations and made their cultures less compatible than is assumed typically. Both governments created stereotypes of the other: East Germans have been inundated with stories of materialist West Germans. Many East Germans express a desire to create a society that is part capitalist and part socialist, an equitable, welfare-oriented society. Many East German also fear that the immense economic power of West German companies will come to dominate the East.

Mixed marriages

Article Abstract:

Companies building strategic alliances with foreign companies must be very careful when building relationships between the two corporate cultures. The corporate cultures of two companies from different national cultures can be quite different and pose formidable obstacles to overcome. Areas of substantial difference include expectations, acquisition of knowledge and learning from past experiences, recognition of value of goods within the constraints imposed from cultural chauvinism, and the wielding of power. When creating an alliance, the firm must be sensitive to the submerged cultural differences of the partner.
