A reversal of fortunes in Asia

Article Abstract:

Asia's financial position appeared strong at the beginning of 1997, although problems with Thailand's economy were beginning to surface. Asian countries began to increase international expansion activities, while Japan reduced foreign expenditure as the yen began to fall. Hong Kong's independence from the UK brought an increase in mergers and acquisitions, with mainland China increasing its stake in Hong Kong firms. The Hong Kong stock market collapsed in Oct 1997, leading to the suspension of many acquisition deals.

South Korea: structural problems

Article Abstract:

The South Korean government is hoping to encourage merger and acquisition activity through measures including lifting restrictions on holdings. However, observers believe that the country's conglomerates will continue to hold a very strong position. South Korean companies will continue to establish a powerful international presence, building on several high-profile acquisitions made in 1996. These included the purchase by Daewoo and Lagardere of French electronics concern Thomson.

Vietnam in reverse

Article Abstract:

The Communist Party of Vietnam may hold back economic reform after announcing a series of measures aimed at reinforcing its control over much economic and financial activity. Attempts to establish a stock market and open up the banking sector in the country have been hampered by bureaucratic opposition, although there have been several direct investments by Asian companies.
