A sculptural expression of harmony

Article Abstract:

Philosopher Rudolf Steiner was one of the first people to see the potential for using concrete in a grand sculptural manner. He used a modelling material to design the Goetheanum building, Switzerland, which was to be the headquarters for his Society of the Anthroposophical Science of the Spirit. The design of the main building incorporates a flowing sculptured form on one face and a stronger, more geometrical element on the opposite face. The 1920s building became a Swiss national monument in 1993, but its preservation has involved the replacement of the outer shell of the building.

About turn

Article Abstract:

A 1960s bungalow has been transformed to embrace diverse architectural references to achieve a visual richness and solve the conflicting needs of south light and northerly prospect. Much of the existing cellular plan remains intact, and the interface between a garage and the eastern gable forms a nw entrance hall. The front of the building has remained virtually unchanged. Internally there are subtle level changes and there are many references to Lubetkin.

Pure expression

Article Abstract:

Steel is aesthetically pleasing when used in construction and can support great weights on a small footprint. It is also easy to form and can be used as a design material in its own right. It can be fabricated accurately and it offers flexibility during maintenance. It is recyclable and its use in construction reduces road transport requirements. British Steel and other companies are continually researching new steel applications.
