Recycling and market power: a more general model and re-evaluation of the evidence

Article Abstract:

A more general model of the 'recycling problem' is employed in the re-examination of the Alcoa antitrust case of 1945. Empirical results showed that the recycling problem had reached a steady state since the early 1920s, long before the Alcoa case was settled. It was also found that the source of Alcoa's long-run market power was the fact that more than half of the aluminum it produced was used in goods that were not economical to recycle. The current, competitive secondary market was also welfare-reducing, relative to an integrated monopoly in both virgin and secondary aluminum production.

Allocation of track capacity: Experimental evidence on the use of priority auctioning in the railway industry

Article Abstract:

A Vickrey-type mechanism is proposed as a solution for allocating limited track capacity to multiple users with indivisible demands. The proposed allocation solution, which sets the price for operating a train to the foregone bid tendered by the operators who were denied their preferred routes, has been implemented in 11 markets for as much as 10 trading periods. The proposed mechanism was able to gain from 90% to 100% of the potential benefits from its generated solutions.

Employment growth, incumbents and entrants: evidence from Germany

Article Abstract:

An analysis of employment growth patterns is presented. The analysis considers longitudinal data for western German businesses. It is shown that intensive and extensive margins for the job generation process are observed. Although cyclical employment fluctuations condition plant operations, the power of new firm entrants is the primary variable which projects employment growth trends.
