A setback for the euro

Article Abstract:

The majority of United Kingdom economists favor joining European monetary union, though much work published by the economists on this issue has been sceptical. Some economists argue that exchange rate stability would bring benefits. Other benefits include increased competition from monetary union, and fears that the United Kingdom may attract less international investment if it does not join the project. Economists favoring joining the euro tend to be more optimistic than those opposing it, and they also believe that any problems with the design of the project can be rectified.

Many ways of saying no

Article Abstract:

New Europe is a new group in the United Kingdom which opposes membership of European monetary union, while supporting ties with Europe. The group is headed by former foreign secretary, David Owen. There are different factions among those who oppose joining monetary union, while those who favor it are more united. This means that the opponents have more problems in showing a united front than do supporters. There are also tensions within New Europe itself.

Not quite across the Rubicon

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom prime minister, Tony Blair, has stated that he favors UK membership of European monetary union provided certain conditions are met. This statement has been given publicity, though it contains no new information on policy Blair is cautious, and the UK public may not favor the project. The reaction of the press means that Blair has had a dress rehearsal for the conflict likely to arise when a referendum is called on the issue.
