A stirring in the attic

Article Abstract:

Leader of the United Kingdom Conservative Party, William Hague, was faced with an embarrassment at the party conference in Oct 1999, when former prime minister, Maraget Thatcher, decided to speak. She appeared like a madwoman who had been confined in an attic, and spoke in defense of General Augusto Pinochet, former Chilean dictator. She also claimed that all of the problems of the United Kingdom had originated in mainland Europe, and the solutions had come from English-speaking countries. Hague has to deal with the problem of Thatcher rather than pretending that it does not exist, or he will not be elected as prime minister.

Man overboard

Article Abstract:

Peter Lilley has been sacked from the United Kingdom Conservative Party's shadow cabinet by William Hague. Lilley had previously called for Hague to be promoted, when he was Hague's boss, and Lilley also performed well as a cabinet minister, with ideas on welfare reform that appear sounder with hindsight. Lilley has toured the UK and discovered that there was concern thatt he Conservatives could not provide quality public services due to their preference for the free market. Lilley's subsequent speech seeking to reassure the public was followed by his sacking, though Hague also believes in the content of Lilley's speech.

America's spring of vigour

Article Abstract:

The leader of the United Kingdom Conservative party, William Hague, has visited the US. US politics has a major impact on the UK in the early 1990s, and the Labor party was especially influenced by the Democrats. The British electorate favors the Labor party and distrusts the Conservatives, and Hague is aware of this. The Labor party adopted many policies used by the Conservatives, but used language from the US in 1997. The political system in the United Kingdom offers fewer power centers for politicians to try out new policies than does the US system.
