A standard check-up

Article Abstract:

A new convention signed by 29 industrialized countries contains the commitment that bribery of foreign officials will be made a criminal offence, regardless of the country in which it takes place. This development will force multinational companies to look more closely at their ethical standards. Companies seeking to assess their ethical standards should ensure that all staff are involved in establishing a clear policy on socially responsible trading. Directors should make themselves aware of all the internationally recognized benchmarks for ethical trading. There must be internal monitoring and external verification procedures.

Health check: fibres in the lungs

Article Abstract:

Asbestos has been closely associated with the risk of lung disease over recent years, but asbestos in itself is not a cancer-causing agent. Any fibre of the correct dimensions will lead to the diseases linked with asbestos if it is durable enough and inhaled in sufficient quantities. As fibres will continue to be required for reinforcement purposes for the time being, they must all be investigated on this basis, and research must focus on setting down criteria for assessing the potential danger associated with individual fibres. The use of substitutes in the fibre-cement industry is also discussed.
