A surfeit of disaster

Article Abstract:

Counseling is often used in the US to help victims of traumatic events, and there is disagreement on how helpful counseling can be. Victims of natural disasters such as tornadoes appear to be less affected than those hit by terrorism, and terrorist actions appear to leave survivors with more guilt. Employers often use counseling as a way of avoiding legal action, and the New York Police Department uses psychologists with officers involved in shootings that have been fatal. Generalizations on the usefulness of counseling are difficult, but it should form only part of an aid package for trauma victims, who also need practical help.
