A system for the design of short term harvesting strategy

Article Abstract:

A novel approach has been developed for solving the short term harvesting problem based on a computerized system, using the linear programming approach. Inefficiency in the traditional manual approach stems from the generation of higher management costs when implementing a feedback policy and higher transportation costs. The model used is a simplified version of the model commercially used in forest companies. Among the considerations included in the analysis of this novel approach are transportation of goods, type of harvesting machinery, supply and demand, average diameter constraints and the effects of myopic solutions.

Agriculture and rural strategy; diversification in the farming industry

Article Abstract:

Finding other uses for farm land has become increasingly important, as Europe was producing more food than needed. Farmers are encouraged to have some land not in production, to have lower yields and land and buildings for other uses. This means that 33% of UK farms have non-agricultural use, which has created 77,500 jobs on farms other than farming.
