A tabu search heuristic procedure for the fixed charge transportation problem

Article Abstract:

A tabu search approach is utilized to solve the fixed charge transportation problem using recency based and frequency based memories. Two strategies, a tabu search procedure and a heuristic approach were tested and compared for each of the intermediate and long term memory processes. The tabu search procedure was found to be 3-4 times faster than the heuristic method in finding solutions for larger problems and for larger problems with higher fixed relative to variable costs.

Determining buffer location and size in production lines using tabu search

Article Abstract:

A simulation-search heuristic procedure based on tabu search proved useful in solving the problem of buffer location and storage size in a manufacturing line. The procedure was tested to describe the manufacturing process and tabu search is used to assist in the search and avoid the problem of being trapped at local optimal solutions. The procedure can be used to model a number of manufacturing processes with different scheduling policies and dispatching rules.

The hot strip mill production scheduling problem: a tabu search approach

Article Abstract:

A heuristic method based on tabu search is used to solve the hot strip mill production scheduling problem. The problem, which usually arises in the steel industry when scheduling steel coil production, is formulated as a mathematical problem. The heuristic method yielded favorable results as seen in the increase in the size of product blocks (PBs), higher percentage of priority orders, big reduction in penalty values and faster time to generate PBs.
