A taxing time for employers

Article Abstract:

UK companies, particularly small ones, are suffering from the responsibility of carrying out administration on behalf of the government. According to the Forum of Private Business's Gerry Dowds, owners of companies do not have sufficient time for tasks such as administering the Working Families Tax Credit, which will be paid through payrolls from April 2000. The Confederation of British Industry is calling for compensation for companies suffering cashflow problems and the cost of improving payroll systems.

Full steam ahead for the economy

Article Abstract:

The UK Budget issued in Nov 1995 should be seen in its wider context such as monetary policy and the way that tax changes can affect the economy. There is a need to change the UK capital taxation system to help boost investment. There were no major changes to help small and medium firms but a number of minor and helpful changes. The Institute of Directors is seeking lower tax levels and reductions in government spending. This should help promote investment and economic growth without inflation.

Will Brown listen?

Article Abstract:

Smaller companies are campaigning on a number of issues to be tackled in the Mar 1998 United Kingdom Budget. These issues include a switch to quarterly payments for corporation tax, and changes to capital gains tax and inheritance tax. Smaller companies could be faced with cash-flow problems due to changes in the way corporation tax is paid. Inheritance tax changes could make it difficult for families to pass on businesses to new generations.
