Banking industry is expected to face further turmoil

Article Abstract:

Prospects for Japanese banking institutions in fiscal year 1998 appear uncertain, as the industry is saddled with huge debts, amounting to a total of $76 billion in problem loans. Conditions may further be aggravated by the rising number of banks filing for bankruptcy claims and the declining value of real estate properties. In 1997 alone, Japan's top of the line international banks recorded a total loan amount of 10.2 trillion yen. These have prompted other bank companies to venture in other financial operations in order to elude the country's ailing pay structure.

Who is right, Moody's or the Bank of China?

Article Abstract:

Moody's Investors Service has given the Bank of China a low rating because of its low performance in the past but the bank continued issuing investors certificates of deposits amounting to $258.7 million. Investors willingly accepted the certificates boosting the bank's confidence. In reality, the investors were largely motivated by the desire to create cordial relations with the bank, which is China's leading financial institution.
