Banking on a competitive future in Italy

Article Abstract:

There has been a marked recovery in the number of merger and acquisition (M&A) transactions in the Italian banking sector, with 28 deals taking place in the first half of 1996. Between 1991 and 1995, a total of 261 transactions were completed. The Italian banking sector has undergone a period of consolidation and restructuring, with small- and medium-sized companies being most affected, but the regional characteristics of the banking industry have slowed M&A activity and encouraged complicated partnerships.

French resistance weakens despite merger

Article Abstract:

It is likely that consolidation will take place among French banks following the Euro30 billion takeover of Paribas by Societe Generale. Consolidation in banking will probably be most beneficial for Rothschild, which was the leading merger and acquisition adviser in 1998, acting on five of the country's top 10 deals. Merger and acquisition deals rose to record levels in France in 1998, and this trend is set to continue, with a particular rise in cross-border business.

Hong Kong bank takes Seoul

Article Abstract:

Merger and acquisition (M&A) activity in the Asia Pacific region has been dominated by HSBC's acquisition of Seoulbank, South Korea's second-largest bank with assets of almost $25 billion which was nationalized in 1998. The acquisition will give HSBC a base in South Korea. The Hong Kong government is taking measures to make M&A easier and has amended the Companies Ordinance to allow companies to restructure at home, rather than offshore.
