A tale of two bosses: Hong Kong's Giordano faces tough challenges

Article Abstract:

Giordano International Ltd. faces stiff challenges amid worldwide success. Its marketing and sales techniques are being imitated by competitors in established markets. Bureaucratic problems in its Taiwan operations also led to a major management overhaul. However, Giordano's most formidable challenge is China. Giordano founder Jimmy Lai Chee-ying caught China's ire after the former insulted Premier Li Peng in a magazine article resulting in the closure of several outlets and franchised stores across China.

Dressing up Barney's future

Dickson Poon has acquired the indebted clothes retailer Barney's Inc. with the hopes of restructuring the company into regaining profitability. The deal is valued at $322 million and Mr. Poon hopes to streamline operations so as to cut operating costs. Mr. Poon maintains that the acquisition is part of his strategy to make the company a global business and that the task of managing the retail store chain will not be easy.

Giordano International Ltd is expected to weather the Asian economic crisis by lower prices, resilient appeal and marketing efforts. The clothing retailer also has a healthy balance sheet and an established name that gives it an edge over other competitors. Other Hong Kong retailers are reporting losses while Giordano's established marketing network and lower prices ensure profits.
