Would consolidation be best for banks in Hong Kong?

Article Abstract:

Analysts of Hong Kong banking sector are considering the idea of a consolidation of the industry as rumors abound about First Pacific Bank's deals with two US firms. Efforts for a takeover of the bank have resulted in a significant increase in the shares of FPB Bank Holding Co, the bank's holding firm, which posted a 28% increase in share prices on July 9, 1998. However, others are skeptical of a bank consolidation given the relatively low percentage of bad loans Hong Kong banks have in comparison to the rest of the region.

Banks in Taiwan now face unique exposure to crisis

Article Abstract:

Analysts believe that Taiwanese banks are also in danger from the regional crisis despite having virtually zero financial troubles overseas unlike institutions in Indonesia, South Korea, and Thailand. Experts advise investors to abstain from the market altogether due to expected troubles. Forecasts point to an impending earnings and asset quality drop due to a regional economic slump and declining exports. The banks are also taking on extra risks due to fierce competition by venturing into new businesses.

Major Japanese banks report losses due to huge property loan write-offs

Article Abstract:

Japan's 11 major banks posted record profits for the financial year ending Mar. 31, 1996. However, seven banks posted losses in their overall operations after writing off bad property-related loans amounting to 6.456 trillion yen, or $60.4 billion. The write-offs, which led the Finance Ministry to lower its estimate of the nation's bad-debt problem, were made possible due to record profits tied to low fund-raising costs.
