A tale of two telephone firms: telecoms deregulation

Article Abstract:

The recently privatised telephone companies NTT of Japan and BT of Britain are faring differently because of regulation. NTT operates under stiffer regulation, and its market share has dropped because of competition. BT is allowed to charge rates that makes undercutting by competitors impossible.

The world's largest telephone companies have created a cartel of sorts that allows them to keep international rates very high, making as much as 60 cents for each customer dollar. In the US, politicians are reluctant to create a more competitive, free market.
