A virtual testing ground

Article Abstract:

A scheme in Hampshire, UK, aims to help good inventions reach production. Inventors often suffer from lack of financial backing and business knowledge, but Business Link Hampshire's Virtual Company scheme aims to remedy this situation. A team specially brought together by the Virtual Company scheme works voluntarily to test and develop the invention, compile a business plan where appropriate, and give advice on potential funding sources. The scheme examined 90 inventions in its first year of operation.

Working without a net

Article Abstract:

UK companies need to be aware of their responsibilities towards employees who work alone and may therefore face particular risks. The Suzy Lamplugh Trust, which focuses on personal safety, believes that effective communication systems play a significant role in minimizing potential risks to employees who work alone. The Health and Safety Executive has also addressed this issue, recommending that premises are designed to allow easy access and exit and that employees receive safety training.

Are you working flexibly?

Article Abstract:

The UK's flexible workers often receive low wages and are not entitled to the usual staff benefits, according to a report from the National Association of Citizens' Advice Bureaux. Employers are increasingly aware that staff need flexible working arrangements, but only one-third of companies have implemented formal flexible work polices, according to the Industrial Society. However, flexible working can actually be a valuable weapon in recruiting and retaining staff.
