A yen to exchange knowledge

Article Abstract:

The Japanese government have introduced a type of private finance initiative (PFI) for the construction market. The new system is likely to be similar to PFI in the UK. Some of the smaller building contractors, in Japan, may be concerned the new system will threaten their share of the market. Japanese building experts were interested in how older buildings are being renovated as refurbishment is now more popular in Japan than in the past. The Export to Japan Unit initiated a visit of Japanese engineers and architects to the UK, to increase collaborations between the British and Japanese.

Curtain walling provides for natural cooling

Article Abstract:

Regent House in Weston-super-Mare, Avon, was built in 1957 using glass and aluminium curtain walls designed to achieve performance levels that are now considered inadequate. The curtain wall had to be replaced with a brief to minimise environmental running costs and reduce summer solar gain. A new heating system was also installed. Winter heat loss had to be minimised and secure ventilation was required 24 hours per day. Low level opening vents were chosen and the new wall was designed with extruded aluminium mullions and transoms and double glazed windows.

The greening of airports: the BAA's version of BREEAM is helping to improve the environmental standards of airport buildings

Article Abstract:

The environmental impact of airport proposals are a key factor in planning, and airport owners must also consider the impact on the airport workers and users. BAA has conisdered how the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) can be applied to airport buildings, and found that it did not account for the wide range of building types at airports. BAA developed its own Enviornmental Standards in Building Design scheme which assesses the project using 33 criteria.
