Fitful Hungarian roads

Article Abstract:

The Hungarian road-building programme is currently achieving mixed results. The 43km section of the M1 motorway between Vienna and Budapest which was completed in Jan 1996 has so far failed to meet original traffic predictions. However, it has captured almost 50% of total corridor traffic in the region. Work on the $480 million M5 privately built toll road is set to meet completion dates in its first stage. There have been problems with obtaining funding for a new bridge over the Danube in southern Hungary.
