ABB sells U.S. gas plant, paving way for takeovers

Article Abstract:

ABB Ltd. announced plans to sell its Lummus Global gas and oil production plant to Chicago Bridge and Iron Co. in a deal valued at $950 mil. The deal raises ABB's cash position in excess of $3 bil. Industry observers speculate the deal opens up the possibility of a large acquisition.

Xstrata makes bid for Resource Pacific

Article Abstract:

Swiss mining firm Xstrata PLC has launched an A$960 mil rival bid for coal company Resource Pacific Holdings Ltd., trumping an A$775 mil offer made by Australia's New Hope Corporation Ltd. The Xstrata offer represents an 85% premium to Resource Pacific's average price.
