ABN Amro braces for protracted fight

Article Abstract:

ABN AMRO Bank N.V. is digging in its heels in a legal and regulatory battle to acquire the Italian lender Banca Antonveneta, hoping to force one of the first cross-border deals in the Italian banking industry. The original takeover bid was frustrated by Banca Popolare di Lodi S.C.A.R.L. which has a stake of 29 percent in Banca Antonveneta and is also making acquisition overtures.

Egidio Galbani S.p.A. of Italy is being offered for sale by its parent company B.C. Partners Ltd. of the United Kingdom for approximately 2 billion Euros ($2.36 billion). The meats and cheeses purveyor had sales of 1.125 billion Euros in 2004.
