AES fired up as returns glow less than bright

Article Abstract:

The U.S power company AES Corp is generating about 15% return from its power projects in China, less than 20% generated from other countries. Low electricity consumption was the cause of low return on power projects. Despite of high economic growth, the country's power output rose 4.5% in 1997, half of the country's economic growth. In first half of 1998, the output grew 1%, compared with 7% economic growth in the period. Over power capacity and government refusal to raise tariffs for power plants also affect the return rates on power projects. Previously, AES has invested about US$380 mn in China or 10% of its total. It gets half of revenue outside U.S. *
