The leading architectural firm in the UK in 1999 in terms of number of qualified architects was Sheppard Robson, with 175 qualified architects, followed by Building Design Partnership International and WS Atkins Architects, both with 174 qualified architects, and Chapman Taylor, with 139 qualified architects. Equal first place in terms of the increase in the number of qualified architects was held by Sheppard Robson and WS Atkins Architects, which both increased the number of qualified architects they employed by 55. The leading architectural firm in 1999 in terms of architectural fee income was Foster and Partners, followed by Gensler and Building Design Partnership International.

The leading architectural firm in the UK in 1998 in terms of number of qualified architects was Building Design Partnership International, with 153 qualified architects. Second place was taken by Chapman Taylor Partners, with 126 qualified architects. In terms of the number of women employed as architects, the leading firm was BDG McColl, with 25 women out of a total of 58 architects. The leading firm in terms of fee income was Foster and Partners.

Article Abstract:

The fourth annual survey of UK architectural practices reveals that Building Design Partnership is now the largest architectural employer with a total of 167 qualified architects. Benoy has shown the fastest growth, with a 53% increase in its number of qualified architects. Foster and Partners is the partnership with the highest earnings and also, for the fourth year in succession, the most admired partnership in the profession.
