APEC rolls up its sleeves

Article Abstract:

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum met with some resistance a US plan to lift tariffs on information technology products by the year 2000. At the opening day of the APEC summit in Manila, Philippines, in Nov. 1996, the US called on the group to urge the World Trade Organization to complete negotiations on the proposal at a ministerial meeting of the world trade body in Singapore in Dec. 1996. APEC members asked a number of questions on the products to be covered by the plan and the time frame for eliminating tariffs, although many expressed support for it.

Reversal of fortune returns nation to days of malaise

Article Abstract:

Japan's recovering economy may be cut short in light of the apprent lack of large-scale economic inducements or income-tax cuts in the new set of economic plans that were unveiled by the country's ruling Liberal Democratic Party. Nonetheless, several economists still contend that the economy may improve as early as 1998 when the aftereffects of the higher taxes begin to ebb.
