AUSTRIA: MID-SIZED BREWERS UNDER THREAT

Article Abstract:

In a survey of the Austrian brewing industry, Contrast Management Consulting sees potential for brewers operating globally on the one hand and for local ones on the other. Mid-sized breweries such as Brau Union, Ottakringer and Stiegl in Austria are seen as likely takeover candidates. Brau Union has a return on investment of 5% and Ottakringer 2%, while Stiegl is 0.5% in the red. Small regional brewers such as Murau <1. Obermurtaler Brauereigenossenschaft ?> and Fohrenburg have a ROI rate of 6% and big international groups such as Anheuser-Busch, Heineken, South African Breweries (SAB) and Guinness 11% to 15%. According to Contrast Management Consulting, Austrian brewers need clear brand policies, good distribution channels, high productivity and professional purchasing in order to survive. International groups such as Heineken, Interbrew and SAB are keen to enter the Austrian market.
