AUSTRIA: BERTELSMANN EXPANDS BOOK DISTRIBUTION

Article Abstract:

Bertelsmann is to launch its second direct marketing channel in Austria. It is to offer mainly encyclopaedias through the "Verlagsservice fur Bildungssysteme". Bertelsmann has 750,000 members in the book club Donauland in Austria. About 330,000 of them are served by door-to-door representatives, another 150,000 by post, and the rest go to the few shops of the bookclub.

AUSTRIA: TELECOM PARTNERSHIP FOR BOOK CLUB

Article Abstract:

Buchgemeinschaft Donauland book club has entered a cooperation agreement with Multikom Austria Telekom. From April 2000 the 780,000 members of the book club can use the fixed-line telephony and internet services of Multikom. For this they need a multimedia telephone, which Multikom sells for Sch 990 rather than Sch 14,900.

AUSTRIA/GERMANY: TALKS ABOUT BOOK PRICE

Article Abstract:

Austrian Libro has agreed to stop with effect from 31 July 2000 the 20% discount on best-seller books sold to Germany via the internet. Under an agreement with publishers, Libro accepts to observe the fixing of book prices for the time being. However, the parties agreed to further talks in order to reach a compromise by October 2000.
