AUSTRIA: CONTINUED DECLINE FOR BRICK MAKERS

Article Abstract:

The industry association reports another double-digit fall in sales of Austrian brick and pre-fab parts manufacturers in 1999, with turnover falling from Sch 2.5bn to Sch 2.2bn. This is the most negative development among the European markets. The overall turnover of the Austrian stone and ceramics industry was 0.14% down from 1998. Production amounted to Sch 41bn. The decline in the brick sector is explained largely with the slump in residential construction in Austria. Since 1995 it has declined by 22% to Sch 43bn.
