AUSTRIA: CAR SHARING WITH DENZEL, OBB

Article Abstract:

With investments of Sch 40mn, the Austrian car dealer Denzel aims to double the number of clients for car sharing, for which it claims to be the only provider in Austria. Currently the service comprises a fleet of 160 vehicles at 110 locations, servicing about 100 companies and 3,000 private customers. Denzel generates an annual turnover of about Sch 40mn with car sharing. The service should break even in 2002. New car sharing points are to be set up mainly at railway stations. Car sharing is already available at 22 railway stations. The cars will be equipped with board computers that are linked to a computer centre to facilitate billing. The car is used with a chipcard, OBB's customer card Vorteilscard. The number of Vorteilscard holders using car sharing is to be raised to more than 1,000 by the end of year 2000 from 750 at present. In 2001 the sales of the cards are to be doubled.

AUSTRIA: OBB GIVES WRONG INFORMATION

Article Abstract:

Testers of the VKI association for consumer information visited 33 Austrian railway stations and inquired about the cheapest connections to a number of European cities. Nineteen of the 33 testers got wrong information. If customers in Vienna followed the advice of the OBB employees, they would have to pay up to Sch 744 too much for a trip abroad. The VKI testers also criticised that many wagons were outdated, toilets dirty or out of order, and that 50% of trains arrived late.

AUSTRIA: OBB CUTTING BACK ON SMOKING

Article Abstract:

OBB started banning smoking on local and regional trains at the beginning of June 2000. Smoking is to be banned altogether on local trains by 2003. Thus OBB is meeting the wishes of non-smoking clients and at the same time cutting cleaning costs and improving the safety of trains. OBB is not planning to introduce a general smoking ban on long-distance trains.
