AUSTRIA: COMPENSATION FOR CONTAMINATED PLASMA

Article Abstract:

In out-of-court settlement Wiener Stadtische, the third-party liability insurer of the Vienna-based company Seroplas, is to pay a total of Sch 132mn in compensation for having caused damage through blood plasma contaminated with hepatitis C in the 1970s. Of the total, Sch 107mn is paid out to 272 claimants. The 36 claimants with liver cirrhosis or liver transplantation will get Sch 800,000 each. The 169 claimants with chronic hepatitis will be paid Sch 400,000. The 23 people with a positive antibody result get Sch 80,000 each. Originally Wiener Stadtische had offered compensations of Sch 20mn. The present agreement follows a ruling in principle by a regional civil court in Vienna.

AUSTRIA: LEGIONNAIRE'S DISEASE IN 1997-99

Article Abstract:

In 1997, 20 cases of legionnaire's disease were diagnosed in Austria, in 1998 28 and 1999 41 cases and 3 deaths. Herwig Kollaritsch from the tropical medicine department of the University of Vienna estimates that no more than 5-10% of the cases are diagnosed.
