AUSTRIA: COMPUTERS TO PRIMARY SCHOOLS

Article Abstract:

Austrian educationalists unanimously agree that children should get to know new media as early as possible and get equal chances to use new media in order to optimally prepare for the working life. To this end, all primary schools in Vienna are to be equipped with two computers per classroom by the end of 2000. Many older teachers feel that they are not up to teaching the use of computers to children. According to educationalist Margarete Grimus, teachers do not have to be computer specialists to arouse children's interest in computers. However, in her opinion, teachers should not only know learning software but also other computer games preferred by children.
