AUSTRIA: DATATRAK TO LAUNCH POSITIONING SYSTEM

Article Abstract:

In cooperation with Wiener Stadtwerke and Wiener Stadtische, Datatrak Austria Telematik, a subsidiary of Siemens and the latter's British subsidiary Datatrak Location & Information Systems, is to launch a common-frequency broadcasting system in Austria in early 2001. The company will install eight long-wave and 120 UHF transmitters. The new system, which will be linked with GSM, can be used to locate vehicles such as stolen cars, hauliers' fleets, hazardous transports etc.

AUSTRIA: AGREEMENT ON MUSIC COPYRIGHT PAYMENTS

Article Abstract:

Austrian private radios have reached an agreement with Austro Mechana on the payment of copyright fees for music. In year 2000 they will pay 1.5% of their advertising income to Austro Mechana, in 2001 1.6% and from 2002 onwards 1.75%. Austro Mechana estimates the revenues in 2000 and 2001 at Sch 9bn-10bn. In January 1999 Austria's Supreme Court ruled that radio stations that store music on their computers have to make copyright payments for such copies. The case was brought by Austro Mechana against Radio Melody.

Austria: Emergency Services to get new radio system

Article Abstract:

The Austrian emergency services are to get a new radio system. Contracts for the Austrian Digital Operating Network for Integrated Services (Adonis) are to be awarded by March 2002. The technology which will be used is to be Terrestrial Trunked Radio (Tetra), which, in contrast to GSM, allows multi-way communication, ensures security and enables certain calls to take priority over others. Companies bidding for the contracts include TetraCall, Walky Talky Telecom and Tetratel.
