AUSTRIA: ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT AT OBB

Article Abstract:

OBB claims to be the only railway company worldwide with an environmental management system. By the end of year 2000 the number of staff at OBB's environment management team is to be doubled to 200. The team is working on a waste management concept, but its main duty will be to create an environment information system. Sylvia Berndorfer, head of the team, says that OBB could save Sch 5.5mn annually by carrying out measures proposed by the team. Waste, water and energy management measures tested in pilot projects in Graz, Linz and on the Bruck-Graz line are to be introduced at all of OBB's 3,500 locations throughout Austria.

AUSTRIA: CROSS-BORDER LEASING OF RAIL TRACKS

Article Abstract:

In order to raise money for investments, OBB is to resort to so-called cross-border leasing of rail tracks, making use of tax benefits in the US. The Austrian national railway company has already signed similar agreements with US investors concerning rolling stock. It is estimated that the cross-border leasing of rail tracks could yield OBB Sch 1bn.

AUSTRIA: OBB DENIES GRANDI STAZIONI DEAL

Article Abstract:

OBB has rejected a statement by Francesco Caltagirone, shareholder of Grandi Stazioni, according to which the Italian company has been entrusted with the modernisation of railway stations in Vienna. OBB merely admits having been involved in informal talks with Grandi Stazioni.
