AUSTRIA: FORD TO EXPAND SERVICES

Article Abstract:

The new chief executive Fritz Schmutzhart says that Ford Austria, like its US parent, is to expand services. Following the acquisition of the fast repair garage chain Quickfit, Ford is looking for an insurance partner for Europe. Mr Schmutzhart says that rather than the less lucrative third-party liability insurance, Ford is eyeing the fully comprehensive cover segment. Fully comprehensive cover is often required for leasing contracts. Ford Austria is planning to start selling cars via internet in mid-2000. This service will include financing by Ford-Bank. Deliveries will take place through Ford dealers. The prices in internet will be lower than list prices. In 1998 Mr Schmutzhart already tested internet selling in the Czech Republic, where 25 cars were sold. Ford Austria expects sales in 1999 to remain at 27,000 cars, which corresponds to 8% of the market. Mr Schmutzhart estimates that it will take 3-5 years to raise the share to 10%. In 1998 Ford Austria generated a turnover of Sch 4.49bn with sales of 23,320 cars.
