AUSTRIA: FREE BEER BY OTTAKRINGER

Article Abstract:

The brewery Ottakringer is offering beer for free on one of the squares of the Austrian capital on days when temperature at the Stephansplatz square reaches 27 degrees Celsius at 14.00 hours. On each visit, a tank lorry gives out up to 240 litres to up to 300 drinkers. The campaign was launched at the beginning of July 1999.

AUSTRIA: DECLINE OF BEER CONSUMPTION

Article Abstract:

Between 1991 and 1999, beer sales in Austria fell from 9.6mn hl to 8.8mn hl. Per capita consumption declined from 156 litres in 1990 to 140 litres per year. The fall is attributed to increased health-consciousness among consumers, which is expected to continue. With a number of restaurant breweries rising, the number of breweries in Austria increased from 63 to 99 .

Austria: Decline for brewing industry

Article Abstract:

The Austrian brewers' association reports that in the first half of 2001 the sales of beer in Austria declined by 4.6% to 4.1mn hl. Exports fell 3.2%.
