AUSTRIA: MEDICAL INSURANCE PREMIUMS TO RISE

Article Abstract:

Werner Reimelt, chief executive of the insurance company Merkur, expects the premiums of medical insurance in Austria to rise by 2.5-4% in February 2000. The increase is a result of longer life expectancy, increased treatment costs and more frequent hospital visits. Gregor Kozak, spokesman for the insurance association, says that also the premiums of motor insurance will be increased. He refers to the disastrous development of profitability in this segment in 1999.
