AUSTRIA: GMO MAIZE TO BE DESTROYED

Article Abstract:

In an effort to prevent a further spread of genetically modified maize, more than 1,000 hectares of maize fields in Lower Austria will be destroyed by 27 July 2001. The GMO contaminated plants will be cut, chopped, checked and then dug into the ground. Farmers will receive a compensation of Sch 23,000 per hectare. Austria will claim that money back from the producer of the maize seeds, Pioneer. The problem is, however, that the GMO contaminated seeds, PR39D81 or MONALISA, can only be traced to the seed merchants, but not to the individual farmers. A hotline has been set up for the estimated 100-200 farmer concerned.
