AUSTRIA: NO MERGER OF A-ONLINE, LION-CC

Article Abstract:

Telekom Austria (TA) and Libro AG have given up plans to merge their internet subsidiaries A-Online and Lion.cc. While TA, which is to go public, needs an internet subsidiary of its own, Libro prefers an international partner in order to expand on the German market. Observers of the media market suggest that Libro might team up with WAZ of Germany. The publisher of Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung would fill a gap, adding an internet portal to its range of activities, while Libro would get a media partner in North Rhine-Westphalia. ORF is prepared to give up its 49% stake in A-Online.

AUSTRIA: AUSTRIANET UNDER THREAT

Article Abstract:

AustriaNet, the internet platform planned by ORF and the association of Austrian newspaper publishers Verband Osterreichischer Zeitungen (VOZ) is faced with an uncertain future. Contrary to earlier plans, the publisher of Salzburger Nachrichten has announced not to join the project. It is speculated that also Mediaprint may reconsider the plan to take a 25% stake in AustriaNet. It is suggested that Kronen Zeitung, which is controlled by Mediaprint, may cooperate with Lion.cc in on-line business.
