AUSTRIA: STRONG GROWTH IN INVESTMENT FUND MARKET

Article Abstract:

The market for investment funds in Austria is forecast to continue to grow at a double-digit rate. In the past few years it has been growing at annual rates of about 30%. By the end of 1999 the volume of the market is expected to reach the Sch 1,000bn mark. Public funds and large-scale investor funds each account for about half of the total. The figure does not include investments by Austrians in foreign funds (just under Sch 100bn) and umbrella funds (just under Sch 70bn). 6.1% of Austrians own shares in investment funds. There is a trend away from funds investing in fixed-interest securities towards share funds and to corporate bond funds. There are 24 investment fund companies in Austria.

AUSTRIA: CHANGES IN RETAIL TRADE STRUCTURE

Article Abstract:

According to figures by the market research institute RegioPlan, between 1998 and 2000 the number of outlets of DIY chains in Austria decreased by 10% to 235. That of food retail chain outlets fell 9% to 5,955. Increases were recorded in the number of outlets among drugstore and perfumery chains and clothing distribution chains, at 22% in each category. The number of outlets of toy retail chains grew 18%. In the sector of books, the increase was 13%, in furniture 8%, in electrical products 5%, in sports equipment 3%. The number of outlets of shoe retail chains remained unchanged.
