AUSTRIA: KNORR STRONG ON THE MARKET

Article Abstract:

Wels-based C. H. Knorr Nahrungsmittelfabrik Gesellschaft m.b.H. claims 59% of the Austrian market. The subsidiary of Unilever employs about 300 staff and produces about 200 different products (canned, dried and frozen soups, pasta and goulash bases, sauces, desserts etc.). Annually the Wels plant produces more than 100mn soup cubes and more than 10mn packets of soup mixes. Most of the products are sold under the Knorr brand. Mazola brand accounts for 8% and Pfanni 7%. Beside the factory in Wels, the Austrian group comprises a canned soup factory in Stainach and a Pfanni potato products factory in Gmund. In 1999 Knorr Austria generated a turnover of Sch 1.87bn, up 4%. Managing director Gunter Rath is not concerned about the future of the Austrian plant. He believes that Austrian consumers' tastes need to be catered for by local production.
