AUSTRIA: REORGANISATION AT OPEL

Article Abstract:

Opel Austria GmbH is to be split into three units as a result of the cooperation of General Motors and Fiat. The Opel engine plant in Aspern, Vienna will be part of Fiat-GM Powertrain. Also the purchasing division of Opel Austria with 30 staff will be integrated with Fiat-GM Powertrain and GM-Fiat Worldwide Purchasing. As GM and Fiat remain competitors in the car markets, the marketing of Opel cars in Austria will be taken over by Opel Austria Vertrieb GmbH. Opel Austria chief executive Franz Rottmeyer is optimistic about the chances of the Vienna plant to supply petrol engines for small cars of Fiat in future. The Italian car maker is likely to supply diesel engines to Opel.

AUSTRIA: OPEL NOT AFFECTED BY PRODUCTION CUTS

Article Abstract:

A spokesperson for Opel Austria says that the engine and gearbox plant in Aspern, Vienna is not affected by the cost-cutting plans announced by General Motors. The US group is to reduce the number of workforce in Europe by 5,000 people in the next 12-18 months and cut production capacity in Europe by 2004 by more than 400,000 from 2.5mn vehicles per year. According to the spokesperson, the Vienna engine plant might in future refrain from additional shifts during demand peaks. The Vienna plant employs about 2,600 staff and produces about 1mn transmissions and 40,000 engines per year. The volume of production will remain unchanged.
