AUSTRIA: MARKET FOR ORGANIC MEAT

Article Abstract:

Retail chains in Austria have so far recorded no drastic increase in demand for organic meat as a result of the BSE scare. However, the BML group (Billa, Merkur and Mondo) says that it is getting less organic meat for its Ja! Naturlich private label than it could sell. Organic meat accounts for about 1% of the sales of beef and veal in the Austrian food retail trade. (The figure does not include butchers and farm shops.) Another 43% carries the quality label of Agrarmarkt Austria (AMA) , which guarantees Austrian origin of the meat. Yet another 43% is labelled as "Austrian produce", but this includes imported meat that is processed in Austria. The food industry has, however, decided to refrain from using the latter labelling for the time being. Another 7% of meat carries no declaration of origin. Just under 12,000 of Austria's 19,000 or so organic farms are members of the Ernte fur das Leben association. About 3,000 of the members produce organic meat.
